They can be ...Depends upon the technique chosen. <br /><br />They can be 'filmed directly' on the set or location as a foreground painting on glass, giving pristine resolution, or as some preferred, can be filmed as a "second pass" directly onto the original negative, which gives incredibly crisp, first generation screen quality.<br /><br />Other ways were done via making "duplicate" negatives or positives and combining these with the painting, though the quality usually was of a lesser fidelity, with grain and contrast.<br /><br />Some used "rear projection" to combine the live action part directly into the painting. Sometimes this could be done very well by some practitioners, while others ended up with a very obvious "hot spot" in the projected illuminated image that gave the game away.<br /><br />Many different methods and many different preferences, according to the matte artist.
