You make great observations too.

Pete

NZPetehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13863364769084676156noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7063592677187148799.post-3485961788071830562022-06-20T14:39:20.366+12:002022-06-20T14:39:20.366+12:00Really glad you called my attention to these movie...Really glad you called my attention to these movies. North Star is fascinating! Like you said, the first act feels like a feel good musical with all the peasants literally singing the praises of collectivization. It's utterly preposterous how Soviet Ukraine is depicted as this utopia, given how the Soviet policies brought death to so many millions of Ukrainians during the Holodomor, but for a history buff it's a fascinating insight into the rose-colored depiction of the Soviet Union that the American left propagated during WWII.

In regards to that shot of the tank approaching the gun at the end of Days of Glory -- I feel fairly certain it's rear projection rather than splitscreen, because the gun changes position, and when it fires there's a muzzle flash and smoke that moves over the miniature portion and the live action foreground. Though I can't be sure, cause like you said it's a virtually flawless composite.
Joe Pattersonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13658932178160678225noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7063592677187148799.post-45911337798264293552017-08-11T13:44:35.109+12:002017-08-11T13:44:35.109+12:00Richard

I think we must still be kids at heart with our love for models, mattes and things that explode.

Although I've not seen the new version of DUNKIRK, I'm delighted to learn that Nolan tried as much as possible to avoid CGI and utilise actual aircraft and ships. Like me, he finds the "physics" of CG just not believable for the most part - and don't get me started on the patently fake 'design' of most CG with idiotic camera moves and needless over the top clutter. No, my friends... you'll NOT catch NZPete sitting through a Marvel cerebral apocalypse!

PeteNZPetehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13863364769084676156noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7063592677187148799.post-74233179048026952262017-08-11T02:22:37.102+12:002017-08-11T02:22:37.102+12:00Pete - thanks again!
